The Tremonton Leader has been the primary source of news for residents of Northern Box Elder County in Utah, located about 30 miles west of Logan and 30 miles north of Ogden.
Residents of Tremonton, Garland, Bear River City, Honeyville, Riverside and Fielding, along with about 10 more communities, count on the Leader for their local news.
Northern Box Elder County, which encompasses the Tremonton/Garland area, has a population of about 18,000 people. It was primarily a farming community, growing sugar beets when the new canal system was built in the early 1900s. But the area has evolved with several large production companies including Nucor Steel, Malt-O-Meal cereal, West Liberty Foods, Autoliv and ATK (Thiokol).
Box Elder County has excellent community services, a top rated school system, including an extension for Utah State University, and tremendous community pride. The county fair in August is the largest and oldest in the state of Utah.
The newspaper business has been thriving in the Tremonton area since 1904, but it was 1914 when the current newspaper took form as the Bear River Valley Leader. The Leader sponsors two community awards for residents each year. They include the Andrew N. Rytting Community Service Award, named after a former longtime publisher, and the Citizen of the Year Award. These awards are presented during the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet in January.
